Some people are fanatics about New Year’s resolutions….I am not. But I do always try to make ‘Back to School’ resolutions which include getting into a healthy routine…. regular bed times, dinner together as a family at the table, and trying to actually cook that dinner instead of picking it up. Heck, I may even try working out this fall (that should last until at least Thanksgiving). But one thing required to get kids back into school is shot records; with this in mind a good resolution for us all would be not to neglect our preventative health care.
This issue is the first ever to feature Super Docs, an exclusive section showcasing the many qualified physicians in our town. Their specialties vary, but their attention to caring for you, the patient, does not. So don’t put off what ails you any longer and scroll through this list to find a doctor near you that’s right for you. If you are new to town use this as a guide to help acclimate yourself to Lawton and keep your care local.
As always, we thank you for reading Lawton Living. We strive to show you the many people, places, and things that highlight the numerous positive attributes Lawton and the Duncan area have to offer! Happy Fall Y’all!
With school back in session our family is getting in the swing of things. One thing that I most welcome about this time of year is football! We were excited to feature Coach Mike Burris from Eisenhower and we wish the Eagles well this fall, as well as, The Highlanders & Wolverines!
Fall also brings holidays! You either anticipate them or dread them...I for one look forward to them every year; so this Christmas season we encourage you to shop local! Check out this edition’s Super Docs; showcasing the many qualified physicians and medical professions in the area. Their specialties vary, but their attention to caring for you – the patient does not. So don’t put off what ails you any longer and scroll through this list to find a doctor near you that’s right for you. If you are new to town use this as a guide to help acclimate yourself to Lawton and keep your care local.
As always thank you for reading Lawton Living Magazine! We appreciate you! And we thank our advertisers for their participation which brings this coffee table publication to readers free of charge. So please shop here first and tell them you saw their ad in Lawton Living today!
This educational issue features the Lawton Public Schools Foundation, as well as a look at the renovations behind Museum of the Great Plains’ one-room school house. I love all things Hallmark and especially have enjoyed the episodes of “When Calls the Heart” which features the pioneer life of a one-room school house teacher, Elizabeth Thatcher. While reading Schoolhouse Face-lift it was not hard to imagine a Lawton version of Elizabeth Thatcher doing her part to educate the children of the plains 100 years ago in the early 1900s. Take the time to go visit this landmark and take along your children or grandchildren to see what a classroom looked like for students in 1902.
Fall is the season in which we celebrate gratitude. One of my favorite Hymns growing up was “Count Your Blessings” written in 1897 by Johnson Oatman, Jr. The lyrics remind you to choose to see the good in all situations and be thankful:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
Now, as a parent, I sing this with my kids at bedtime and we each say a blessing we are thankful for. Today, I am thankful for the like-minded, talented people I work with and for the Lawton Living advertisers and readers.
This issue’s theme seems to be serving those in the community.
I can’t think of a better way to commemorate the season of blessings than with these great articles featuring ministries and organizations serving the Lawton area: Hungry Hearts Ministry, Salvation Army Women’s Axillary, National Pan-Hellenic Council, 4MUSA Men’s Movement, and Dream Team Prosthetics.

There are so many things going on around town this season. With graduation nearing us, Lawton Living Magazine is proud to feature a few of the many local graduates to cross the stage this May. Share a picture of your favorite scholar with us for consideration in upcoming issues. My oldest child, Gatlyn (5), is graduating from pre-k moving on to kindergarten next fall. My niece, Shyann, will be graduating from Angelo State University this May as well. Two major milestones, both could bring tears to my eyes, but regardless it is an exciting season. We congratulate all the graduates in your family!

Spring is my favorite season. I love the warmer weather, the grass turning green and trees leafing out. Spring rejuvenates me and seeing everything come back to life makes me excited to get up in the mornings. Coffee on my porch just tastes better when birds are chirping and the flowers are starting to bloom. I would encourage you to turn off your devices and go outside! Take a walk and breathe it all in. I have seen a certain meme a couple of times lately that says, ‘no child remembers their best day of watching TV.’ How true is that statement?!?! Stretch your legs with a walk in the park or help your neighbor with their yardwork. I won’t speak for you, but my soul is healthier after a day spent outdoors.
As always, we want to hear from you! Tell us what you love and what you would like to see more of in future issues. We are always interested in featuring your events and uplifting stories about the great people and organizations around town. Keep us in mind this spring and summer with your different events and milestones. Please let our advertisers know you saw their ad in LAWTON LIVING and remember to SHOP LOCAL.
Are you as excited as I am about the warmer weather and summer months ahead?! We hope you are each planning trips, as well as staycation opportunities in the months to come. Don’t forget to look just a few miles down the road when considering a weekend getaway. Check out the Travel Guide in this edition to learn more.
I have three small children (Gatlyn (7), Georgia Lee (4), & Guy David (6 mo)) and we love to make the most of the lazy days of summer, which generally are anything but lazy. To help pass the time, I have included some of our favorite healthy treats which your kids can help you prepare. Read the fruity popsicle concoctions in Cool Summer Treats (page 70).

As Summer is winding down and we can see the cooldown of Fall just ahead, I look forward to the change in season. Undoubtedly, it will also be a season of finding the “new normal” of back to school and fall events but change can be rejuvenating, and we could all use a little bit of that right now.
Savor your last days of Summer by turning off the devices and enjoying the world around you. I’ve heard ‘no child remembers their best day of watching TV.’ I will add to that, no adult says their favorite part of the day was spent scrolling through social media or online shopping. Be aware of time suckers and be intentional with your choices. Get outside, take a StoryWalk or visit the Foreman Prairie House… after you read about them in this issue! Also in this issue is the new Kids’ Corner. Enjoy it with your kiddos then share their artwork and jokes with us to be considered for the next Kids’ Corner!

It is time to think HOLIDAYS! I love this time of year. Watching my small children enjoy these traditions makes this time so special. In the upcoming months, take a moment to reflect and slow down. Yes, it takes effort to slow down - especially with the impending holiday rush, but how else can you treasure the memories being made if you are too busy to enjoy them? Let’s try and be intentional, put our phones away, gather together, and be present!
I don’t think anyone woke up on January 1st upset that 2020 is now in the past.
What I love about the new year is a clean slate- like fresh fallen snow – white and unblemished, beautiful, and spotless. This is our chance to make plans on how we can make this year better than the one before! Hopefully those goals and ambitions are still underway only a few months into 2021.
With positive changes in mind we have rolled out a new design for our cover. We hope you like our new look! Please know how thankful we are for you our readers & our advertisers. Our ongoing goal is to showcase Hometown Living at Its Best by showcasing the many people, places, and things happening around town while simultaneously supporting the local businesses that make Duncan thrive. Show them your support by shopping local and have it crafted here whenever possible, skipping the made in china masses.
This edition contains articles on the selfless residents of the Duncan area, like the Kiwanis organization, read more about what they are doing in ‘Give back, Make a Difference.’ Also read the stories of three families who are celebrating new members to their home in ‘Adoption was Our Miracle.’
